My favourite one man tent - the Hilleberg Enan

Before I went to Ireland to start the Wild Atlantic Way I knew that I needed a tent that could withstand high winds. It also needed to be compact and lightweight (1400g with attached footprint, including pegs and bags) so that I could carry it on my Brompton. After much thought and research I decided on the Hilleberg Enan, not cheap (currently £850 including footprint), but a strong three season tent with very high quality. By the way, the Enan is very similar to the Akto but the latter is made of heavier material and pole so that it can withstand snow loading. In the UK and Ireland it is very unlikely that I will be out in the snow!

The Enan is also very quick and easy to pitch, being a single pole tunnel tent, just eight pegs, about 10 minutes, and it’s fully pitched, ready for anything! The pitch doesn’t need much space either which is ideal for my wild camping. In addition I also need a tent where the inner and outer pitch together, which the Enan does. You can leave the tough footprint attached when you pack away, which also makes pitching so easy and quick.

The porch area has lots of space to put a folded Brompton and/or bags. The inner tent is 2.15m long (I’m 1.90m) and 0.95m at its widest point, enough space at the side to put another bag and the bits and pieces you need during the night.

Small tents often have condensation issues but the Enan has two triangular vents in the fly, one at each end, plus a completely mesh door, it stays dry inside!

For me this is now by go to bicycle touring tent, it gives me everything I need and will last for many years!

By the way, soon after I started my Wild Atlantic Way trip I camped with the Enan on a headland in Ballynatra, next stop was the USA! A lovely, sunny afternoon turned into a gale at night, I was so glad to be in the Enan, it didn’t move an inch! If you are expecting high winds there are two attachment points at each end for additional guys. That day I had additional guys with me but the wind came suddenly and I wasn’t going out in the dark to attach them!
